Published my Portfolio Site
Shipped a side project
I finally did it!

I'm a backend developer and data scientist by trade, and I've always been amazed by good portfolio sites. You can do so many fun things with frontend systems, but my javascript abilities have never been great. I've always learned best through projects, so I figured the fastest way to get a handle on React would be to take a good portfolio site template and make it my own. I ended up forking this wonderful template from Manu Arora.

You could make the most amazing data pipeline in the world, but it's worthless until you can build a fun and interesting way to expose it to users. This is precisely why we hired a professional to build our frontend for babbl.dev, and also why it's so important that I get up to speed. Somebody is gonna have to make the edits!

The only things left to do are tweak a few more pieces to make it my own and add the DNS entry, at which point I'll be live at sam.cartford.com. Hope to see you there!

P.S. -- If you're ever looking for inspiration and/or something to aspire to, check out my personal favorite site from a planetary scientist: https://brandoncjohnson.com/
Started a new job
First six-figure salary
I didn't want to announce this on other platforms, but I feel comfortable disclosing it here.

I finished my first week at thoughtbot! It's been a lot of fun, and I'm excited to embrace my pivot from software development to product development and consulting.

This job also marks my first ever six-figure salary since graduating from coding boot camp in 2018!

The first two years of my career were full of uncertainty and disappointment. I've only had fun with my career in tech in this past year or so, so I'm happy that I stuck it out!

Finished a project
Learned a new tool
Just finished a Medium-like blog clone which was done using Next.js, TailwindCSS, Sanity CMS and little bit of TypeScript.

What a fun little project it was! It's a simple blog with comments but I learned how to integrate a third-party system into Next.js build. I learned about Sanity CMS which was new to me and I really loved it! I am in the process of building my own website and was about to build a simple blog system on my own from scratch but I will consider abandoning this idea in favor of using Sanity.

The build was done by following Sonny Sangha's YT video.
